Snorkeling With Turtles

Over the past few weeks, St. Thomas Boat Charters has been snorkeling with an abundance of green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles. We have a handful of secret, crowd-free spots we love to explore. In the Virgin Islands, green turtles spend most of their time gliding over grassy beds, relaxing and munching on fresh turtle grass. Often, you’ll spot a remora fish swimming alongside them. While these fish resemble small sharks, they’re harmless, helping keep the turtles clean and free of disease and algae.

Hawksbill turtles, less common and harder to find, spend their time near coral reefs. With their hawk-like bills, they forage for snails and other reef creatures, sometimes even sleeping inside coral heads or beneath the coral. Most of the time, the turtles are calm and comfortable around snorkelers, although they occasionally swim at a faster pace depending on their mood.

When we’re not hanging out with turtles, we’re exploring vibrant reefs and fascinating shipwrecks teeming with colorful fish and coral. At Great St. James, a shallow wreck sits in just 10 feet of water, offering an easy view of the sunken vessel below. Resident turtles often swim around and even through the wreck, adding to the magic. Buck Island, off St. Thomas, is home to a larger wreck in 40 feet of water. Split into two pieces, this wreck attracts larger species like grouper and snapper, making it an exciting snorkeling spot.

The Virgin Islands boast warm, crystal-clear waters, with visibility ranging from 50 to 100 feet most days. In summer, water temperatures climb into the high 80s, while in the cooler months, they dip to a still-comfortable 78 degrees.

At St. Thomas Boat Charters, we’re here to create an unforgettable day on the water. Whether you want to soak up the sun, relax in the shade with an island playlist, or dive into the underwater wonders, we’ll ensure your day is truly epic. Call us today, and let’s explore all our favorite spots together!

We operate three identical vessels, each capable of accommodating up to 12 passengers. For larger groups, we can host up to 36 passengers by utilizing all three boats. During the recent holiday season, we catered to several large groups and delivered unforgettable days on the water. When multiple boats are used, we stick together throughout the day, tying the boats at each stop to create a shared, open space—like adjoining rooms in a hotel.

We pride ourselves on being a boutique operation, offering a high-quality experience away from the crowds. With top-notch boats, experienced Captains, and unmatched service, we’re here to help you enjoy the blue waters of St. Thomas and create memories that will last a lifetime. Give us a call today!

Island Hopping in Paradise

The past few weeks have brought amazing boating weather, and St. Thomas Boat Charters has been busy exploring the best spots throughout the US and British Virgin Islands. We’ve focused on discovering unique and beautiful places away from the crowds, seeking out those hidden gems only accessible by boat for a truly memorable adventure.

This past weekend, our journey took us to the BVI and the small island of Virgin Gorda. Home to “The Baths,” a fascinating collection of house-sized granite boulders piled along the beach, Virgin Gorda is a must-see for the whole family. Explore the rocks at your leisure, swim in the pools surrounding them, and soak in the beauty of the crystal-clear blue waters.

For those with a bit more adventurous spirit, venture to the back side of Virgin Gorda and discover the North Sound. This beautiful bay is dotted with private islands and gorgeous beach bars. Richard Branson’s Necker Island, a private paradise available for rent, is a popular celebrity getaway.

We decided to make a two-day charter out of our North Sound exploration and booked rooms at the Saba Rock Resort. This small island resort boasts an amazing beach bar and hotel. Rebuilt after being damaged in Hurricane Irma, Saba Rock offers a small boutique hotel with stunning views, a full marina, and two inviting bars and restaurants. The rooms are beachy yet modern, ensuring a comfortable stay. Saba Rock also provides a free water shuttle to neighboring islands and beach clubs until 10 pm, offering ample opportunities for exploration.

The North Sound is truly a special place, offering a tranquil escape with fresh fish, cold cocktails, and pristine beaches. On our return to St. Thomas, we enjoyed lunch at Little Dix Bay, a secluded 5-star beach resort nestled on a breathtaking beach. It’s the perfect place to unwind and escape the stresses of everyday life.

Our final stop was a snorkel adventure at the Indian Rocks, one of the Caribbean’s best snorkeling spots. Four giant rocks rise from the water, surrounded by vibrant coral and an abundance of colorful fish. With all the action close to the boat, it’s easy to enjoy the underwater sights and sounds. We provide a variety of floats and snorkel gear for everyone to share in the experience.

Whether you dream of exploring the US Virgin Islands or the BVI, St. Thomas Boat Charters can help you create a memorable day on the water. Give us a call today!

Happy Holiday from St. Thomas Boat Charters

Our season opener was yesterday, and we had a great day on the water! Captain Nate took his group up to Virgin Gorda to see the Baths. The Baths is a 40 square mile area of giant granite boulders piled up on the beach, that is so fun to see and explore. After a great time at the Baths Nate cruised down to Jost Van Dyke for an amazing beach lunch at the Soggy Dollar Bar. If you like white sandy beaches and clear blue water Jost Van Dyke is a must see. The food is so good, and the drinks are really tasty as well. Captain Nate had the Mahi Mahi wrap and it was fresh and delicious. Captain Brandon also had a group out yesterday and they explored the best of St. John. Brandon’s group was able to see 3 large turtles at Maho
Bay, and they also got to swim with a family of squid. So cool! Brandons group wanted tacos for lunch, so they took the north shore ride up to Lime Out and had an epic meal with lots of cool artisan tacos. Today we have a few groups headed out to check out Christmas Cove and they are going to have lunch at Pizza Pi! The one and only floating pizza boat. Christmas cove has really amazing snorkeling, and you can enjoy fresh pizza all in one spot. No matter what type of excursion you would like, St. Thomas Boat Charters has something for everyone. September is a great time to be in the Virgin Islands!

St. Thomas Boat Charters has been taking full advantage of the calm seas and light winds. The snorkeling has been incredible, and we’ve spent a lot of time observing the sea turtles at Maho Bay. Large turtles have been grazing on sea grass at the bottom, and they frequently pop up near us, giving our guests a close and personal experience with both turtles and remoras.

Another popular snorkeling spot has been the shipwreck at Christmas Cove. Tropical Storm Ernesto shifted the wreck, and it’s now right-side up, offering a fresh perspective. Captain Brandon recently snorkeled through the ship, and we’ve posted the video on our Facebook page for anyone who’d like to see it.

Some of our regular lunch spots are closed for September, so we’ve been spending time at Water Island and Cruz Bay, St. John. Water Island is home to Dinghy’s, a great beach bar with amazing conch fritters and mahi tacos. They offer a diverse menu with something for everyone, plus a fantastic cocktail selection. High Tide in Cruz Bay is another excellent lunch option, offering Caribbean-style cuisine with a beautiful view. This time of year, the Virgin Islands are peaceful, with very few people around, making it an ideal time to visit.

Later this month, St. Thomas Boat Charters will begin our annual maintenance program. This is when we take the boats out of the water for cleaning and prep for the upcoming season. Captain Nate is dedicated to keeping the boats in top shape, ensuring they’re fresh and ready for our guests.

We’ve also upgraded our snorkel gear, adding high-quality, comfortable equipment, along with luxury pool noodles and floats for lounging and snorkeling. The noodles make it easy to relax while enjoying the vibrant marine life. St. Thomas Boat Charters is excited to share an unforgettable day on the water with you! Our experienced captains are passionate about the local history and love to share it with our guests. Give us a call today to book your adventure!
